Campsite near Périgueux, capital of Périgord
Périgueux and its magnificent Saint-Front cathedral can be discovered by crossing the river Isle. This superb Byzantine-style edifice, listed as a World Heritage Site since 1998, stands on the banks of the river. It is the jewel of the town and one of the symbols of the Dordogne. The cathedral is a stopover on the route to Santiago de Compostela. However, if you get the chance, don't miss the guided tours of the cathedral roofs. It's an original way to admire the cathedral's Byzantine couples and enjoy a superb view over the city. However, the history of Périgueux goes back well before the cathedral was founded. The Vésunna museum tells the story of life in Périgueux in Gallo-Roman times. Some offer a peaceful, natural setting, while others have entertainment for all the family and a water park with a heated pool and waterslides. Périgueux is not the only treasure in the Isle valley, however. Along the river that flows between Périgord Vert and Périgord Blanc, you'll find pretty villages and surprising sites like the château de Jumilhac, whose owner will tell you the story of his alchemist grandfather. The Château des Bories, in Antonne and Trigonant, is a perfect example of the architectural evolution of Périgord, with medieval parts combined with a Renaissance staircase.
Gourmet holidays in the Isle Valley
Like many places in the Dordogne, the Isle valley is a region of fine food. It is particularly renowned for its truffles. Sorges has its own truffle market. Unfortunately, this only takes place in December and January, outside the camping season, although the Dordogne does have a few establishments open all year round. Even if you can't visit Sorges during the truffle market season, the truffle eco-museum welcomes you all year round. Here you can learn all about the secrets of this delicious mushroom. Truffles are just one of the specialities of the region, which boasts many others, starting with duck in all its forms: foie gras, confit, etc. At some of the campsites in the Isle Valley, you'll find a range of services and sometimes even restaurants where you can sample the region's specialities. On campsites without restaurants, the campsite staff will be able to point you in the right direction to the best restaurants in the region for a taste of Périgord gastronomy.
A natural setting for outdoor activities
The Isle has a wild environment and its banks are home to a multitude of birds, including kingfishers, diving ducks and swans.
