Tamniès, a village perched in the Beune valley
Built on a rocky spur overlooking the Beune valley, Tamniès once enjoyed a strategic position that was easy to protect. Although it is no longer necessary to protect the village today, its status as a hilltop village lends it a great deal of charm. Around the 13th-century church, which at one time served as a watchtower, Tamniès boasts a number of typical Périgord houses with slate roofs. Although the Tamniès museum does not have the same collections as the Pôle International de la Préhistoire in Les Eyzies-de-Tayac, it does have a collection of carved stones discovered by the villagers, demonstrating, if proof were needed, that prehistory is everywhere around the Vézère valley. However, the heritage of Tamniès is as much natural as it is historical. The village is built on the banks of a 5-hectare lake set in lush greenery. Its 4500 m² beach is an invitation to swim, fish or enjoy outdoor activities.
