Val de Dronne: from Brantôme to Saint-Aulaye, an exceptional heritage area
When it comes to heritage, the Périgord Vert is often compared with the Périgord Noir. It has to be said that the Sarlat region boasts some of the most beautiful villages in France, such as Domme and Beynac. However, although less famous than its neighbours in Sarlat, Brantôme has plenty of assets to rival its neighbours in the Périgord Noir. Nestling in a meander of the River Dronne, this charming little town is home to a magnificent abbey whose origins date back to the 8th century. As well as its elegance and bell tower, Brantôme Abbey, set against a cliff on the banks of the Dronne, hides behind its walls a surprising bas-relief carved into the walls of the grotto of the Last Judgement. Take the time to admire it during your next camping holiday in the Périgord Vert. In July and August, the Dronne becomes the scene of water jousting, which takes place once a week in Brantôme, opposite the abbey. This is a very popular spectacle that you should try to see during your stay in the Dordogne.
The village of Bourdeilles, with its cobbled streets and castle, or the churches of the Ribérac region, complete the wealth of heritage in the Val de Dronne in the Périgord Vert. And, during your camping holiday in the north-west of the département, don't hesitate to make a little infidelity to the Dordogne and visit Aubeterre-sur-Dronne. Although situated in the Charente, on the north bank of the Dronne, this village, listed as one of the Most Beautiful Villages in France, is only a few hundred metres from the Dordogne. Whether it's near Brantôme, Ribérac or even Aubeterre sur Dronne, you'll always find a campsite in the Dordogne to visit these pretty villages in the Val de Dronne. Depending on your tastes, you can stay on a camping pitch or choose a comfortable rental. Depending on your preferences, there are campsites with swimming pools, waterslides and activities along the Dronne, as well as smaller, more relaxing nature campsites.
The Val de Dronne, an unspoilt natural setting for camping holidays
As well as its heritage, the Dronne will win you over with its setting and unspoilt nature. Its pristine waters are home to migratory fish and otters. Mink can be spotted on its banks. Not to mention the birds that nest on its banks. From Brantôme to its confluence with the Isle, the Dronne valley has been classified as a Natura 2000 site. This setting is an invitation to explore, particularly on canoe trips, which allow you to admire the Dronne from a different angle. The purity of the Dronne's water will also delight river bathers. Some of the Périgord Vert campsites have a beach on the Dronne. Ideal for cooling off on hot summer days and for playing with the kids. Fishing enthusiasts will not be outdone. The Dronne is a category 2 river. As with all fish-farming rivers, you'll need a fishing licence. If you don't have one, don't hesitate to go to the reception of the campsite where you're spending your holiday. They'll be able to tell you where and how to get your card.
A selection of campsites to suit all tastes
The banks of the Dronne are dotted with campsites. From small 1 or 2 star campsites to larger 3 or 4 star establishments, there's something for everyone. If you're looking for an active holiday destination, choose a campsite with activities and entertainment for children and a swimming pool with waterslide. If, on the other hand, you prefer peace and quiet and the countryside, choose a smaller campsite with fewer facilities and no on-site entertainment or activities. The Périgord Vert campsites near the Dronne have pitches for tents, motorhomes and caravans. But you can also rent comfortable accommodation.
